Meltdown: The Predictable Distortion of Global Warming by Scientists, Politicians, and the Media – Review
Some outstanding reviews have been written so I will not cover the same finely ground except to say that this book “isn’t” documented is absurd. Every graph/chart is specifically linked to 5 1/4 pages of “references” with author, publication, date and page numbers. Specific references “in the text” are also cited. I also take some issue with “Publishers Weekly’s” comments in that Dr. Michaels “fully” explains why he favors “wider” research funding, gives particular peer review weaknesses and tenure problems. In “Satanic Gases,” a excellent discussion of “Public Choice Theory” exists that explains why government scientists may be just as “biased” as anyone else. Two gentlemen earned a “Nobel Prize” for their work in this field. It is truly amazing to me how totally biased and fact short programs like CNN’s recent “Melting Point” program and the similiar “NOW” travesty on PBS just a week ago are given a “critical pass” but books full of detailed data like these are trashed. On April 28, 1975, “Newsweek” printed a story titled “The Cooling World” citing government (NAS, NOAA) scientists expecting global cooling to the point there might be “terrible famines” and a “new little ice age.” Since that never happened, we now have leftist NGOs and others correctly predicting the opposite. The “mainstream media,” many of whom know next to nothing about “the science,” parrot the NGO propaganda. I suggest one might go to the “Tax Foundation” and look up the millions of dollars gone to leftwing groups like the National Resources Defense Council, Union of Concerned Scientists and many others by the likes of the Hewlett Fdn., the Packard Fdn., the Turner Fdn., the Ford and Rockefeller Fdns., the Pew Charitable Trust among others. In 2002 alone, the top twelve environmental lobby groups met approximately 2 BILLION. No wonder they need to keep the “crisis of global warming” in vogue – its their meal ticket – BIGTIME. Could the same be true for some academics and their federal grants? But when the energy industry supports some climate research, well, thats finally got to be a “capitalist conspiracy.” Finally, “Meltdown” ends with a “campaign speech” on global warming originally composed by Michaels currently using actual quotes of politicians – it’s a must widely read!
