The Weather Makers : How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth – Review
“The Weather Makers” by internationally acclaimed scientist Tim Flannery is a one-stop-shop for the great picture on human usually caused weather alteration studies. It is an comprehensive assessment, yet very approachable for all backgrounds- another excellent model of a difficult subject matter formatted for broad audience appeal and fully understanding. The first 25 or so pages dedicate one a complete over-view of all aspects of global warming and Flannery’s easy, flowing writing style lures one deeper and deeper into the accounts of global warming and it harmful effects on life all over the planet. From shifting and rapidly disappearing ecosystems to water scarcity to rapidly accelerating force of hurricanes, melting glaciers and rising oceans, there is much to consider for eventually taking direct action in greatly reducing fossil-fuel use to significantly reduce heat trapping CO2 emissions. This book concludes with what the cost of doing nothing about global warming such as is the fossil-fuel industry notion of how currently taking corrective action will hurt the world economies, yet the insurance industry is word of the serious effects of rapidly increasing universal weather cooperated catastrophes and doing nothing is no longer an option. Flannery gives many examples of how citizens can reduce their energy use footprint and includes resources for holding action. Flannery makes several references to the work of James Lovelock (Gaia, etc.) and for further study and knowledge of Earth weather and nutrient rigid processes/dynamics, I warmly recommend his book “Healing Gaia: Practical Medicine for the Planet”. It is done in a beautiful coffee-table/textbook format and written for a broad audience appeal.
