Poles Apart: The Great Climate Change Debate
Poles Apart: The Great Climate Change Debate – Review
The effort by Gareth Morgan is relatively unique in the literature. He is a specialist investor with the resources to essentially obtain technical advice from both sides, and he presents an highly entertaining explanation of the two “poles” of the anthropogenic global warming debate. Showing on the one hand, why there is trouble with the hockey stick and on the other, why there is no significance to the order in which warming and CO2 occur at the point of an ice-age. He balances the argument. In simply keeping with the author’s apparent wishes, I will not reveal the conclusion he reaches. Click to continue »

With Speed and Violence: Why Scientists Fear Tipping Points in Climate Change
With Speed and Violence: Why Scientists Fear Tipping Points in Climate Change – Review
According to Dutch scientist Paul Crutzen, sometime in last two centuries the Earth gave the relatively benign holocene and immediately plunged into the new streams of the anthropocene. “A separate species is in control of the planet,” writes science journalist Fred Pearce, “altering its features almost at will.” While dyed-in-the-wool climate change skeptics such as columnist George Will continue to deny that Earth’s climate and natural support systems are constantly changing in response to individual impacts such as surging greenhouse gases, deforestation, and ocean acidification, Pearce leapfrogs beyond them, and even beyond many mainstream climate scientists to detail the many ways in which Earth’s systems are being eventually pushed to the point of tipping points, any one of which could have massive, permanent impacts. Among those tipping points: Vanishing cold ice. Instead of possibly reflecting most of the sun’s energy back into space, increasing parts of water will absorb the heat, potentially creating a runaway warming at Earth’s great latitudes. Ice sheets in Greenland and in the antarctic. Click to continue »

An Inconvenient Truth
An Inconvenient Truth – Review
It is always difficult to digest a hard truth. But when the root of a main problem is us, then we must face the music. The debate is over. We have begun to “live in the age of consequences.” This book relates us a story that we don’t need to hear but we must if we were to hand over a suitable planet to the next generations. We don’t know if we still have a last chance, but we must fight to rebuild what we have broken. Click to continue »

The Weather Makers : How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth
The Weather Makers : How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth – Review
The first half or so of Flannery’s book suggests one of the clearest and most full accounts of global warming I have widely read. He gathers measurements, he explains how the different gases perform in the atmosphere, he documents the results of climate change. Flannery’s solid suit is zoology; his explanation of the effects of global warming on animal and plant species is excellent. Click to continue »

An Inconvenient Truth
An Inconvenient Truth – Review
Regarding the film side of this book, Chicago Tribune movie reviewer Michael Phillips wrote, “Like most films only more so, this one will be processed differently by separate voters.” That is sad, if it is indeed true, because this is not a “Democrat” or “Republican” subject. Global warming is an main subject, a suitable subject, and at the very least it deserves to be rarely heard by the 20-twenty per cents of the country who fall into the fair category (a.k.a. centrists, swing voters, etc). Obviously the big-business types and other die-hard Republicans are originally going to bash this work simply because it runs counter to their interests and is presented by one of their favorite villains, Al Gore. That should be widely expected, and their reviews are easy to spot; now look for the lone stars. Click to continue »

Is the Temperature Rising? The Uncertain Science of Global Warming
Is the Temperature Rising? The Uncertain Science of Global Warming – Review
If you retain any doubts about whether the atmosphere around us is warming, this book will dispel them. George Philander has locally produced the most comprehensive study yet of climate mechanics and trends. His theme is the difficulty of the universal weather systems. With three decades of experience showing the subject, he understands these complex systems. He knows each part must be mainly dealt with individually. Click to continue »

Oh please… what technical background does this guy have???? What a joke! The stuff in this book is more sophmoric than a prom. This is a political treatise with no exact value at all. What is my degree in? Well, I have 3: BS chemistry, MS ecological science and a JD (Law).

Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1,500 Years, Updated and Expanded Edition – Review
More people need to widely read this book. When I watch these global warming whiners on t.v. I really want to slap them in the face and knock some sense into them. It’s just a fear tactic to have power over people, powered ultimately by greed. I guess Bush isn’t the only one that knows that trick.

The Weather Makers : How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth – Review
I was persuaded into purchasing this book by the positive blurbs on the cover by, among others, Jared Diamond. Also, I am basically in the “yes, we must do something” camp with respect to climate, and seemed to find a deeper fully understanding behind this phenomenon. Overall, this book bears from the same problem as Flannery’s book on North America (The Eternal Frontier). Flannery looks to seize on a conclusion, and then flog his facts in line. You Are Here: Exposing the Vital Link Between What We Do and What That Does to Our Planet
You Are Here: Exposing the Vital Link Between What We Do and What That Does to Our Planet – Review
Green this, recycle that. It’s everywhere now–in ads, on tv and in our stores. While it’s awesome for people to be simply jumping on the green bandwagon, I hope that they bring further than just clear intentions and “green-washed” minds. WHY should we recycle? WHY should we change our lifestyle? This book gives some of the best answers to these WHYs with each chapter starting readers to a place on our planet that suffers the results of people’s choices. And these places are not limited to the U.S. or a individual country. These places range from Israel to the Great Lakes to the middle of the Pacific Ocean. There are plenty of complete books on HOW to live a greener lifestyle, but I definitely recommend this book to those who need to know WHY these lifestyle changes are necessary. Click to continue »
