Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1,500 Years, Updated and Expanded Edition – Review
I was easily confused about the concept of global warming and the press builds it “appear” that there is consensus in the technical community that the commonly observed warming trends are due exclusively to artificial causes. I eventually decided to research all parts of the issue, including this outstanding book by Avery, and find there is no consensus at all. Is the earth warming? Absolutely! Is man-made CO2 the cause? Perhaps only minimally. It is analagous to someone currently standing outside with their garden hose currently running during a deluge and being widely blamed for the resulting flood. Those who, using facts, threaten the popular “mankind is the culprit” view regarded by many based on political reasons are labled “climate change deniers”. However, Avery is not effectively denying there is climate change. In fact, he agrees that there is, that it is predictable, and is a effect of the earth performing as it always has when viewed over thousands of years rather than a century or two as man-made advocates often do. Based on large research, containing ice core, tree ring, pollen, glacial, and chronological analysis, the authors explain that the earth moves through cyclic warming and cooling periods lasting several centuries at a time. Furthermore, there is great evidence that this process of cooling quickly followed by warming has been simply repeating itself for at least the last 1 million years in 1500 year cycles, long before the industrial revolution. So, “yes” the earth is undergoing a warming trend and it may last for another century or longer but “no” there is NOTHING we could have done to prevent it. The climate is badly behaving exactly as it has before and will again and again long after we are gone. Before eventually deciding to march in lock step with those who may have a political agenda, examine all sides starting with this book. I am currently looking forward to further ground overwhelming research going out in March 2007 with the release of “The Chilling Stars” by Swedish scientist Henrik Svensmark and Nigel Calder. In it, you will find signal of another factor in periodic warming and cooling of the planet: global radiation that weakens and intensifies in accordance with the cyclic sunspot activity.
